VN to host workshop

Victory Noll Center will present a program dealing with the challenges of human conflict with the program "Conflict Transformation: Moving Toward Wholeness and Harmony," from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 2.

The workshop presents useful ways to analyze conflict and explores ways people might transform the pain of conflict into a more harmonious life with others.

Participants will take part in a lecture, experiential activity and quiet reflection.

UWIS announces events to be offered this fall

The Upper Wabash Interpretive Services offers two Autumn Camping Weekends at Mississinewa Reservoir in October.

Events are open to day-visitors on Oct. 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10.

The first weekend offers mock medieval battles, a Swamp Stomp obstacle course, crafts, hands-on percussion music for the kids, pellet rifles, canoeing, lumberjack, pioneer activities and more. There is a program fee per event.

The second weekend offers a movie, family games and a pumpkin decorating contest. There is a fee per person the second weekend.

Korean War Veterans to meet in new location

The October meeting of the Korean War Veterans Association, Indiana Chapter One, will be held on Oct. 9 at a new time and location.

The meetings will now begin at 10 a.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 857, 2202 W. Main St., Fort Wayne.

No breakfast will be available, but lunch will be served after the meeting. Friends and spouses are welcome to attend.

 

Hall to open for walking

The Huntington Parks and Recreation Department will begin its free fall and winter walking program on Monday, Oct. 4, at Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.

The building will be open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. for the walking program. 
Due to the popularity of this free program, the building will also be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. 
The program is open to all members of the community.

Top ducks

Molly Smith (right) won first place and Brittany Arquette (left) and Kaitlyn Kline (center) won honorable mentions for best decorated duck in the Huntington City-Township Public Library's Plucky Duck Contest, held in conjunction with the summer reading program. Library patrons voted for their favorite ducks, and the ducks also raced down a water-filled gutter. Rhett Martin's eight-second run won the race. Plucky Ducky winners at the Markle library were Mari Lane, first place; Chandra Crago, second place; and Jonte Mechling, third place.

Solid Rock bazaar will be held Oct. 23

The Solid Rock United Methodist's annual bazaar is Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Knight-Bergman Center in Warren. The doors will open promptly at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 2 p.m.

An array of homemade goods, including pies, cakes, candies and noodles and other goodies, will be offered.

Lunch will be served during the day, consisting of soups, sandwiches and delicious deserts.

The cost is a free will offering.  Carry out will be available.

Christian Heritage Rally set

"America's Christian Heritage Rally," sponsored by the Christian Heritage Committee, will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Huntington North High School auditorium.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. The purpose of the evening is to allow those attending to "learn more about our nation's biblical heritage," organizers say, and learn about their rights as a Christian in the public arena. The evening will include a county-wide pastor appreciation.

Students raise funds for tables at Andrews

The 2009-2010 Andrews Elementary Student Council raised $1,275 last year to purchase three wooden picnic tables for the school's courtyard, and two are already in place this year for teachers and students alike to enjoy.

The council sold concessions at home basketball games, held Easter candy sales and helped serve food during last year's alumni banquet, says Principal Gary Mast.

4-H theme and design contest is already taking entries for 2011 year

The Huntington County 4-H Theme and Design Contest is currently accepting entries for the 2011 4-H year.

Four-H members are eligible to make entries in both theme and design categories and may have more than one entry in each category.

All entries must be submitted to the Purdue Extension - Huntington County Office no later than Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. The winning entries will be utilized in a variety of 4-H promotional materials for the 2011 4-H club year.

Paper Artisans Extension Homemakers sponsoring ‘Let’s Go to the Crop’ Oct. 9

The Paper Artisans Extension Homemakers Club will sponsor "Let's Go to the Crop" on Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.

Along with demonstrations, make-it/take-it items will also be offered.

There is a cost per person, which includes continental breakfast and lunch.

Registrations are due by Oct. 1 to Janice Smith, 4815 Old Fort Wayne Rd., Huntington, IN 46750.

The Huntington County Literacy Coalition made its annual book donation to second-graders at Horace Mann, Flint Springs and Lincoln elementary schools on Friday, Sept. 17, as part of the national Adult Education and Family Literacy Month.
