Visitor Bureau launches new tourism website

The Huntington County Visitor and Convention Bureau has launched a newly designed website to help promote county tourism.

The new face of the Visitor Bureau features colorful photography and provides visitors with information on area attractions, lodging, outdoor recreation, eateries and events to help plan their trip to the area.

Designed by Reusser Design in Roanoke, the new site is easy to navigate and enables the Visitor's Bureau to customize and update the information displayed on an ongoing basis.

Each month, Huntington Catholic School gives out "Spirit Awards" to students from each class who display Christ-like behavior. The awards for the April character trait of prayerfulness were given on April 1 after the All-School Liturgy at St. Mary Church.

Lancaster PAL awards scholarships to seniors

The Lancaster Elementary PALS (Parents at Lancaster School) Organization announces the recipients of its annual scholarships to be Huntington North High School seniors Kelsey Konz and Kayla Schenkel.

Konz is the daughter of Mark and Hope Konz, of Huntington.
She is involved in FFA, varsity soccer, freshman volleyball, National Honor Society, Psychology Club, Natural Helpers, freshman mentoring and youth group.

She plans to attend Ivy Tech to become a physical therapy assistant.

Schenkel is the daughter of Mark and Cindy Schenkel, of Huntington.

Markle, Bippus banks will co-sponsor dinner

MarkleBank will help sponsor the Boys and Girls Club’s Steak ‘N’ Burger Dinner on April 26.

Bippus State Bank and MarkleBank are teaming up to sponsor The Boys and Girls Club of Huntington County's sixth annual fund-raising Steak ‘N' Burger Dinner on April 26 at Crestview Middle School.

The evening will start with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m., with the supper and program at 6:30 p.m.

The evening's entertainment includes a routine from the club's dance group, a vocal arrangement by members and a family-friendly, clean performance by local comedian David Dean.

Heart of a Servant

The award is presented in honor of the late Dorothy Scheiber, Jack's wife and Bill's mother, who was a long-time volunteer at Love INC. Fetrow, who is currently on medical leave, has made Love INC "a significant and responsive organization of Huntington County," Jack Scheiber said in presenting the award.

FWO doctor to discuss podiatry in seminar at university April 8

Dr. Gage M. Caudell, of Fort Wayne Orthopaedics, will present on "Today's Podiatrist" on April 8 in Hiner Hall of the Science Hall at Huntington University at 4 p.m.

Caudell is a specialist in foot and ankle surgery and taught at St. Vincent Charity Hospital Podiatric Residency prior to relocating to Fort Wayne. He holds a doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Des Moines University - Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

He also completed a Case Western Reserve University sponsored podiatric residency at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland, OH.

Director of HU volunteer services to be featured at foundation b’fast

Grace McBrayer, director of first year students and volunteer services at Huntington University, will discuss the impact of HU students in the community and around the world during the April 13 breakfast meeting of the Huntington University Foundation.

The university's Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service, a student-directed organization, gets HU students involved in the local community, instills a lifelong tendency toward service and promotes the idea that one person can make a difference.

HCS to host kindergarten orientation April 28

Huntington Catholic School will host kindergarten orientation for the 2011-12 school year on Thursday, April 28, in the Primary Building.

Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. and the program starts at 1 p.m.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2011, are eligible to attend.

To register, call the Primary Building at 356-2320. There is a registration fee due April 28 to hold your spot.

Bring a copy of your child's immunization records, birth certificate and baptism certificate on April 28.

18 Northwest students in third year of PE study

Eighteen students at Northwest Elementary School are participating in the third year of a study designed to see if there is a correlation between physical activity and academic improvement in elementary students.

The study, being done in conjunction with Huntington University, is modeled after a similar study undertaken at an Illinois high school and is believed to be one of the first in the United States to look at elementary students.

Arts Initiative to sponsor fund-raising dance

The Huntington Art Initiative, Inc., will sponsor a dance on April 29 at the Knights of Columbus in downtown Huntington.

Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. for the "Dance through the Decades." Complimentary chips, pretzels and popcorn will be served, and a cash bar will be available throughout the night.

The dance begins at 8 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m., with live music provided by The Remnants, a five-member group from Fort Wayne.

Kids Kampus taking orders for pies

Pathfinder Kids Kampus child care center of Huntington is partnering with Moore's Pie Shop for a pie fundraiser through Thursday, April 7.

Pathfinder Kids Kampus is offering the following pies:

• Fruit pies - including Dutch apple, blueberry, strawberry, strawberry rhubarb, cherry and peach;
• Soft pies - including coconut, lemon, chocolate, butterscotch and peanut butter;

• Poured pies - including pumpkin and sugar cream;

• Specialty pies - including black raspberry, caramel apple walnut, pecan, dietetic peach, apple and cherry.

PROS spaghetti supper is April 19

PROS (Parents Reaching Out at Salamonie School) will host a spaghetti supper in conjunction with the Warren Area Expo on April 19 at Salamonie School.

The supper will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The menu includes spaghetti, garlic bread, tossed salad, green beans, applesauce and homemade cakes in a variety of flavors.

There is a cost, with a discount for students and a cap for families. Children age 5 and younger eat free of charge. Carry-out will also be available.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Linda Holdcroft Memorial Scholarship fund.
