Extension office announces upcoming 4-H events list

Purdue University Extension - Huntington County Office announces the 4-H calendar of events for the next several days.

Monday, May 16
• 5 p.m. - Animal ID forms deadline. Extension Office.
• 7 p.m. - Horse and Pony leaders. Courthouse Annex.

Tuesday, May 17
• 5 p.m. - Bowling. Rainbow Lanes.
• 6 p.m. - Canine Capers. Community Building, Hier's Park.
• 7 p.m. - Jefferson Jr. Farmers - Home of the Chenoweths.
• 7 p.m. - Fair board meeting. Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.

Metro Kiwanis awards scholarships at meeting

The Huntington Metro Kiwanis Club presented scholarships to Huntington North High School graduating seniors Elizabeth Bolinger and Lindsay McElhaney during its May 9 meeting.

Bolinger received the $1,000 John Michael Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a student majoring in the field of human service. She is the daughter of Robert and Marie DeWeese, of Warren, and plans to major in psychology at Purdue University, eventually earning a master's degree in family counseling.

Fair Tax Association to meet at Quayle Center

The Huntington County Association for the Fair Tax will hold an informational meeting on Monday, June 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center, 422 Warren St., Huntington.

Fair Tax advocates want to replace the income tax with a federal consumption tax of 23 percent on retail purchases.

They say the change would create jobs, eliminate payroll taxes, provide a monthly rebate that ends taxes up to the poverty level and tax the underground economy, illegal immigrants and foreign taxpayers.

Huntington Catholic School students displaying the character trait of the month for May, "self-discipline," were recognized at the final All-School Liturgy of the year at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Huntington on Friday, May 6.

Benefit to be held at East of Chicago in Warren

Around 30 Huntington North High School students will benefit from a fund-raiser at East of Chicago Pizza in Warren on Tuesday, May 17, and Tuesday, May 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. each night.

The fund-raiser will benefit the students' trip to the British Isles in June. Students will serve as wait staff for both evenings.

East of Chicago is located at 111 E. First St. in Warren along Ind.-218.

 

Workshops offered for 4-H cat project members

A series of three 4-H workshops has been scheduled to help 4-H Cat members learn more about the health, grooming and showmanship for their project work.

Members are encouraged to participate in the following workshops:

• May 25, at 6:30 p.m., Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.

• June 15, at 6:30 p.m., Family Living Building, Hier's Park.

• July 13, at 6:30 p.m., Heritage Hall, Hier's Park.
Members may also bring their project cats to any of the meetings after the first workshop if the cat is current on their vaccinations.

Local master gardeners sponsoring two achievement awards for youth

The Huntington County Master Gardeners are sponsoring two achievement awards for youth enrolled in 4-H Garden and Floriculture projects.

Applications will be accepted until May 31, To be eligible, a 4-H member must be enrolled in the 4-H Garden or 4-H Floriculture project a minimum of five years, including the current year.

Youth invited to enter essay contest

The Huntington TEA Party will sponsor an essay contest for Huntington County youth, ages 5 and older, who live outside Huntington Township.

Participants are asked to write an essay of 100 words or fewer or draw a picture about why they would like to be part of a summer reading program.

Entries must include the author's name, age, address and phone number.

Entries must be submitted no later than June 1 to The Huntington TEA Party, PO Box 1005, Huntington, IN 46750.
