Kids Kampus gets grant for outdoor play

Pathfinder Kids Kampus, in Huntington, has received a $5,000 grant from the Head Start Body Start National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play.

The grant will be used to improve the outdoor play space at Pathfinder Kids Kampus.

"This grant will enable our Early Head Start Center to be able to utilize our outdoor playgrounds to their fullest potential assisting us in bringing the classroom outside," says Lisa Mettler, Early Head Start Center director.

Boys & Girls Club offers free meals through Summer Food Service Program

The Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County is providing children free breakfast and lunch at the club during the "In the Spotlight" summer program from now until Aug. 12.

Breakfast and lunch will be served Monday through Friday, with breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

The club's food service program is an extension of the government-funded Summer Food Service Program. Children age 18 and under may receive meals through SFSP and are not required to be members of the Boys & Girls Club to participate in the meal program.

Parkview to present asthma program

Parkview Huntington Hospital will present a free, three-hour program, "Understanding Asthma," on Saturday, July 9, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the lower-level classrooms at the hospital.

"Understanding Asthma" is an educational opportunity designed for asthmatic adults, children and their parents, who would benefit from a positive experience with practical asthma education. Ed Strubel, Parkview Huntington Hospital pharmacy manager, will give a short presentation on the role pharmaceuticals play with breathing disorders at 2 p.m.

PHH gets ranking as ‘great community hospital’

Parkview Huntington Hospital has been named one of "65 Great Community Hospitals" by the magazine Becker's Hospital Review.

The magazine's list included hospitals with fewer than 550 patient beds and was based on master list based on other national rankings of hospitals, with input from industry experts and an evaluation of each hospital's credentials.

HNHS announces second semester honor roll students

Huntington North High School has announced its honor roll for the second semester of the 2010-11 school year.

SSF to hold barbecue cook-off

The Salamonie Summer Festival Barbecue Cook-off will be held on July 3, at Tower Park in Warren.

The cook-off will be held prior to the annual fireworks display, which marks the culmination of the 44th annual festival.

There are two categories, pork ribs and chicken breast, and a limited number of entries will be accepted.

The cooked meat can be sold to the general public starting at 3 p.m. and judging starts at 5 p.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded to first through third place winners and an overall "sponsor choice" will be selected as well.

IN the ground

Lowell Stouder plants sweet corn seeds in a community garden on ground provided by Huntington University. More than 7,000 seeds, provided by Paul Jacobs of Beck's Hybrid Seeds, were planted and should be ready for harvest around Labor Day. The sweet corn patch complements the main community garden at Huntington North High School. Both gardens are organized by Huntington County resident Stan Bippus.

Lions Club will hear Paul Roth

The next Roanoke Lions Club meeting will be on Monday, June 20, at 7 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Roanoke Area Heritage Center and Museum located at the corner of First and Main Streets in downtown Roanoke.

The speaker will be Paul Roth, Roanoke Elementary School principal. The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served at the end of each meeting for all attending.

Bike run on June 25 will fund equipment for Andrews Volunteer Fire Department

A bike run will be held on Saturday, June 25, in Andrews. Proceeds from rider and passenger costs will benefit the Andrews Volunteer Fire Department for firefighting equipment.

Sign in will begin at 11 a.m. and the ride will start at noon. Sign in and starting point will be at Miller's Pub, 12 N. Main St. in Andrews.

Door prizes will be given at every stop.

 

‘Dining with Diabetes’ series begins June 20 at County Courthouse Annex

The first of four "Dining with Diabetes" classes will be held Monday, June 20, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Huntington County Courthouse Annex, Suite 202.

The class is designed to teach participants how to cook good, healthy meals while keeping their diabetes, or a close relative's diabetes, in mind.

A light meal is included in the cost of the course. Other course dates include June 27, July 11 and July 18, all Mondays.

The class is jointly sponsored by the Purdue Extension Office - Huntington County and Parkview Huntington Hospital.

June Senior Friday movie will be ‘Morning Glory’

"Morning Glory" will be the June Senior Friday movie at the Huntington 7 theater on Friday, June 24, at 8:30 a.m.

Free coffee and doughnuts will be available, as well as door prizes.

The monthly movie is a product of a partnership between the Huntington County Council on Aging, Norwood Health and Rehabilitation Center and Parkview Huntington Hospital.

June's co-sponsors include Markle Health and Rehabilitation, McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, Miller's Merry Manor, Parkview Home Health and Hospice and Reust Lawn Care and Landscape.

Spectrum will reunite in Huntington July 15 and 16 for free concerts at PAL

The classic rock band Spectrum, formed in Huntington in the 1970s, will return to Huntington for free concerts on July 15 and 16.

Concerts both nights will be held at the Huntington PAL Club from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Spectrum traces its roots back to 1973, when guitarist Randy S. Pierre and drummer Jeff Barts formed the heart of the band while students at Crestview Junior High School. Once at Huntington North High School, they recruited Peter Weicht on bass, Jim Sprinkle on guitar and Scott Lockwood as lead singer.

Joint Vacation Bible School June 19-23

Salamonie Church of the Brethren and Lancaster Wesleyan Church will combine to offer Vacation Bible School on June 19-23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Salamonie Church of the Brethren.

The Vacation Bible School involves parents as well as children, and a canned food drive for the Bread of Life Food Pantry in Warren will be ongoing throughout the five-day event.
