Five Huntington County 4-H members head to state fair for tractor operators’ contests

Five Huntington County 4-H members will move on to the Indiana State 4-H Tractor Operators Contests after placing in the top three in their divisions at the Area XI 4-H Tractor Operators' Contest on Saturday, July 30, at the LaGrange County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Jami Norwood won the Junior Lawn division, and Michael Winters took the Junior Farm division.

Kyle Lahr qualified for state by being second in the Senior Farm category, and Jason Thacker was third in the Senior Lawn division.

Trio of local Jones firms get honor

Three Edward Jones branch offices in Huntington County recently were ranked within the top 25 percent of the country for excellence in client service at Edward Jones.

Financial advisors and branch office administrators receiving the recognition are Chuck Harris, Brandy Draughn and Jane Helmeid, Jim Scheiber and Wendy Adams and Jim Warner and Kelly Yeiter.

Sharrad receives W.P. Woods Award

Doug Sharrard (left), a member of the Huntington Lions Club, receives the organization's W.P. Woods Award from Gerald Smelser (right), president of the local club. The award is given to someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for the club. Sharrard has served as club secretary for the past five years, attending 95 percent of the meetings and turning in accurate and on-time reports.

Smoke testing of sewer system to start Aug. 8

Crews will conduct smoke tests of the sanitary sewer system in the city of Huntington starting Aug. 8.

A smoke test survey will assist inspection crews in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system.

The smoke seen coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is non-toxic, non-staining, has no odor, white to gray in color and creates no fire hazard, says Dave Schoeff of the city's engineering office.

The smoke should not enter the home unless there is defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps.

HNHS Class of ‘86 to have 25th reunion

The Huntington North High School Class of 1986 will hold its 25-year reunion on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 7 p.m. to midnight at Norwood Golf Club in Huntington.

Food, drinks and entertainment will be part of the celebration, and there is a per-person cost.

In addition, there will be an 18-hole golf scramble during the day, starting at 12:30 p.m.

The class is also using Facebook as a way to connect with classmates. The group's name is "HNHS Class of 1986 25 Year Reunion."

Orientation Day at HCS set for Aug. 9

Huntington Catholic School will hold a mandatory Orientation Day on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

All HCS families with children in kindergarten through eighth grade are asked to attend either the morning session, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., or the evening session, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held at the Huntington Catholic School Primary Building, 820 Cherry St., Huntington.

The sessions will include information about school procedures and various opportunities at the school.

Shoe Sensations celebrated its arrival to Huntington with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 28. The store is currently one of 80 stores in 11 states nationwide. Youth Services Bureau sets used book sale

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County will hold a used book sale on Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Donations may be dropped off at the YSB, located at 1344 Maple Drive, Aug. 15 through Aug. 18, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"Due to the major funding cuts associated with all of the programs we offer, we need to raise additional monies to ensure the services will continue in Huntington County," says Jan Williams, executive director.
