Gulley pledges allegiance to the flag

Warren-area farm site of SWCD ‘Cover Crop Field Day’ on Friday, Sept. 16

Various cover crop samples were grown in a demonstration plot on the farm belonging to James Leazier north of Warren as the Huntington and Wells counties Soil and Water Conservation Districts will host a “Cover Crop Field Day” on Friday, Sept. 16.

The Huntington and Wells counties Soil and Water Conservation districts will host a "Cover Crop Field Day" tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon at the James Leazier farm north of Warren.

The event will include a demonstration plot seeded with 10 varieties of cover crops and guest speakers to provide information about the following topics:
• Benefits of cover crops - root systems, retention of nutrients and reducing soil erosion.

• Methods of seeding cover crops.

• How to determine the best variety of cover crops to seed on your farm.

Follies Leg Contest offers a chance to pick your favorite

The infamous Red Stocking Follies "mop ladies" - along with nine fellow Huntington County residents - have uncovered their lower extremities for the Follies Leg Contest, in which cash will decide the best calves in the county.

The leg contest, a traditional accompaniment to Tri Kappa's triennial community variety show, gives non-performing community residents a chance to get in on the action.

Rescue personnel have new tool in arsenals

Area rescue personnel now have an additional tool in their arsenals, one specifically designed to extricate someone trapped in stored grain.

"If somebody gets trapped in a grain bin, there's not anything in Huntington County to remove them properly," says Mark Shideler of Salamonie Mills of the situation before the Liberty Rescue Tubes were purchased.

Cub Scouts kick off popcorn sale

Cub Scouts Pack 3607 has kicked off its annual popcorn sale.
Scouts will be selling "Trails End" popcorn, packaged by Weaver Popcorn, in Van Buren.

Popcorn will be sold through mid-October. Proceeds from the fundraiser assist in sending scouts to the annual summer camp, held in June.

 

Scheiber sending out his ‘volunteer army’ to gather UW goal of $750,000

Jim Scheiber has sent his "volunteer army" out into the community with a mission of gathering $750,000 in gifts that will then be poured back into the community.

Scheiber, chairman of the 2011 fund-raising campaign for the United Way of Huntington County, kicked off the fund-raising campaign over lunch Friday, Sept. 9, at the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA.

He brought with him one of the many individuals who have benefited from being on the receiving end of those United Way contributions.

McCrea earns first Citizen Commendation Award

Greg McCrea was awarded Huntington County's first Citizen Commendation Award by Sheriff Terry Stoffel on Sept. 9.

McCrea was among the first to arrive at the scene of a car accident along U.S.-24 on Aug. 22. Miami County resident Patricia Kilcrece had blacked out behind the wheel, Stoffel says, losing control of her vehicle, which rolled four times. McCrea acted to alert emergency help and remained at the accident to offer support.

U.S. News again has HU among top tier

Huntington University has once again been named one of the Top 10 Best Colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report, according to the annual collegiate rankings released on Sept. 13.

Huntington was ranked ninth in the region in the 2012 edition of the magazine's guide to the nation's Best Colleges, and 10th in the "Great Schools, Great Prices" category for best-value colleges in the Midwest.

Ladies Day out will feature shopping, pampering

All women are invited to attend a day of pampering and shopping on Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ABWA Ladies Day Out, sponsored by the local American Business Women's Association, will be held at Central Christian Church, 500 MacGahan St. Admission is free.

The day will include massages and makeovers as well as raffles and an end-of-garden market.

Items for sale will include designer jeans, baked goods, jewelry, clothing, scarves, purses and handcrafted items.

Sleep disorders progam at PHH

Parkview Huntington Hospital will present a free program titled "Sleep Disorders: Get a Better Night's Sleep."

The program will feature pulmonologist Srinivasan Devanathan, MD, of Parkview Sleep Medicine, a member of Parkview Physicians' Group.

The program is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

It will be held in the lower-level classrooms at Parkview Huntington Hospital at 2001 Stults Rd., Huntington.

Drovertown neighborhood to meet for block party

The fourth annual Drovertown Block Party will be held Sunday, Sept. 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. Peter's First Community Church at 206 Etna Ave.

All are welcome to attend and join in the fun, and enjoy food, games, and music.

Samples of ice cream will be available as well as children's games and activities.

Cattlemen meet Tuesday

The Huntington County Cattlemen will meet on Tuesday Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Family Living Building at Hier's Park.

Topics for discussion include: proposed changes to beef and starter calf projects in the 4-H Fair book; judge selection for 2012 Preview Show, 2012 4-H Fair Beef Show and 2012 4-H Fair Starter Calf Show; and a review of the food tent at the 2011 4-H Fair.

Interested 4-H members and parents involved with the beef and/or starter calf project are encouraged to attend this meeting.
