Korea vets will meet on Feb. 11

The next meeting of the Korean War Veterans Association, Indiana Chapter One, will be Saturday, Feb. 11, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 857 in Fort Wayne.

The meeting will start promptly at 10 a.m. and will be followed by lunch.

Spouses and friends are welcome to attend.

The post is located at 2202 W. Main St., Fort Wayne.

 

Donations sought for post-prom party at HNHS

Planning has begun for the post-prom party for Huntington North High School seniors.

All seniors are invited to attend post-prom for free, even if they don't attend the prom.

The party is fully chaperoned and will provide entertainment with food, games, music, dancing and door prizes.

This year, the theme is "In it to win it!"
The event will be held on May 13, from 1 to 4 a.m. in the HNHS field house following prom.

The post-prom is presented and staffed by the senior parents. Funding is provided by senior parent donations and by community donations.

Shoshannah McKinney's Chinese language class from Huntington North High School celebrated the Chinese New Year with Nancy Peace's first grade class at Northwest Elementary School. HNHS students (from left) Laresa Lund, Alysse Bustos, Dan Jacobs and Andrew Sizemore lead the first-graders in practicing the tones found in the Chinese language. The younger students learned many different words through activities, games and stories. The Chinese New Year was celebrated on Jan. 23.

Sheriff’s association to award scholarships

Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel recently announced that the Indiana Sheriff's Association (ISA) will again be awarding scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students pursuing a degree in criminal justice studies.

Approximately 40 $500 scholarships will be made available for qualified applicants. Scholarship requirements include:

• The student must be an Indiana resident.

• He or she must be a current member of the ISA or a dependent child or grandchild of a current ISA member.

Vessels is new president of HU Foundation Board of Directors

Ed Vessels, owner of HiValu LLC, a leadership and consulting firm in Roanoke, has been elected president of the Huntington University Foundation Board of Directors.

Vessels will serve a three-year term. As president he will also serve on the university's board of trustees.
Vessels succeeds Brooks Fetters, recently elected mayor of Huntington.

Three university faculty members get promotions for 2012-13 year

Three Huntington University faculty members have been granted promotions for the 2012-2013 school year.

Dr. Thomas Bergler will be promoted from associate to professor of ministry and missions. Dr. Luke Fetters will be promoted from associate to professor of ministry and missions. And Diana Shenefield will be promoted from instructor to assistant professor of nursing.

The changes were approved by the HU Board of Trustees at its January meeting.

Bruce Langton, a contemporary artist and children's book illustrator, sketches a fantasy animal during a program at Northwest Elementary School on Jan. 27. Langton visited the school as part of an educational outreach program sponsored by the Honeywell Center in Wabash. He showed students what inspires him and how he makes his art.

Deadline for apps is April 2

The Optimist Club of Huntington will be awarding three $1,000 scholarships for 2012.

Applicants must be Huntington County residents who are high school seniors.

Applications are available at Huntington North High School, and at the office of Matheny, Hahn, Denman & Nix LLP.

The application deadline is April 2, 2012.

Pathfinder to hold financial wellness workshops

Pathfinder Community Connections, the community development division of Pathfinder Services, will host a series of workshops focused on overall financial wellness beginning Feb. 2 in Huntington.

The series will emphasize building and improving credit scores, and will include four different sessions intended for any community member who would like to improve their financial situation.

Benefit dinner for Bowmans on Saturday, Feb. 4

A benefit dinner will be held for Jeromy and Pam Bowman, of Markle, on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The dinner will be held at the Markle Fire Sta-tion, 150 W. Sparks St. in Markle.

The Bowmans were victims of a house fire late last year.
Jeromy Bowman has also been a veteran with the Markle Fire Department for over five years.

The menu includes soups, sandwiches, deserts and drinks.
In addition to the dinner, a silent auction will held.

Admission to the event is by free will donation.

The Cottage Kitchen and Café, in Roanoke, celebrated its opening with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, Jan. 26. ‘Ashfall’ author will meet fans on Jan. 31 at Huntington library

Huntington City-Township Public Library will welcome Indianapolis native Mike Mullin for an author visit and book signing at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The event will be held in the Adult Meeting Room located at 255 W. Park Drive, in Huntington.

Mullin's first novel, "Ashfall," was published in September 2011 by Tanglewood Press.

He will discuss the geology of the Yellowstone region, talk about the experience of researching and writing his first published novel, and present a Taekwondo demonstration.
Copies of Ashfall are available now at Huntington.
