Scholarships offered to local 4-H members, alumni

The Huntington County Extension Office currently has applications available for local 4-H scholarships.

Huntington County 4-H members who are eligible may stop by Purdue Extension's Huntington County office to pick up an application or print and complete an application found online at www.ag.purdue.edu/counties/huntington/Pages/4-HYouthDevelopment.aspx.

Available scholarships include:

County in top portion for health

Huntington County is the 24th healthiest county in Indiana, a ranking that puts a smile on the face of at least one local health official.

"When you have 92 counties and we're ranked 24th, that's actually a pretty good thing," says Deb Doctor, Huntington County's public health nurse.

The health rankings for 2012 are based on a standard formula measuring how healthy people are and how long they live.

OSV invites community to open house May 5

Our Sunday Visitor invites the community to attend an open house on Saturday, May 5, in celebration of its 100th anniversary.

The open house is being held 100 years to the day from the publication of the first edition of the national Catholic newspaper, Our Sunday Visitor.

The May 5 open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and will include tours of the building, located at 200 Noll Plaza, off of Old U.S.-24 on the east edge of Huntington, as well as refreshments and activities for children.

Workshop set for 4-H swine project

The Huntington County Extension Office announces the Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA+) workshop for 4-H swine members for the 2012 4-H program year.

The workshop will be offered on two Mondays, May 7 and May 14, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the 4-H Community Building, Hier's Park.

Youth in their first year of the 4-H swine project and those individuals who have not passed a certification test, administered by the county Extension office, must attend this annual workshop.

Youth need to attend only one of the two scheduled evening workshops.

Robotics team 57th out of 100 competing at world championship

The Huntington County 4-H Robotics team finished in 57th place in its division of the FIRST Robotics Competition world championship event, held April 25-28 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO.

Team THRUST 1501 was one of 100 teams competing in the Curie Division, one of the four 100-team divisions in the competition.

Prior to competing in the world championship, the local
robotics team had won the Boilermaker Regional competition at Purdue University.

Eakins is commissioned as a second lieutenant

Gregory Eakins, son of Larry and Meta Eakins of Andrews, graduated from Officer Candidate School and was commissioned March 31 as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

Eakins graduated from Purdue University in May 2008 with a degree in electrical engineering.

While at Officer Candidate School, he learned the basics of Marine leadership, the M16A4 service rifle, close order drill and issuance of orders through the five-paragraph order.

His next phase of training is in Quantico, VA, at the Basic School.

 

Advance directives program June 7

The Huntington County Council on Aging will host a program on advance directives on June 7.

The program will be presented by local lawyers, giving information on advance directives, which are legal documents that provide instruction to health care providers if someone becomes unable to do so in person.

The directives can include health care powers of attorney and living wills.

At the conclusion of the program, attendees can schedule appointments with attorney volunteers who will prepare advance directives for them, free of charge.

Zion UMC invites public to mother-daughter meal on May 7

The Zion United Methodist Church women invite women and girls to a mother-daughter meal on May 7 in Fellowship Hall.

The meal will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Meat and drink are furnished, and guests are asked to bring a side dish.

The program will be presented by Kayleen Reusser in the sanctuary at 7:15 p.m.

Reusser has written nine children's books, biographies of Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, books on the Greek gods, and Celebrities Giving Back and Recipe and Craft Guide to Indonesia.

Synthetic drug presentation May 7

Crestview and River- view Middle Schools invite both parents and community members to attend a presentation on synthetic drugs, on Monday, May 7, at 6 p.m., in the Crestview Middle School auditeria.

The presentation will be led by Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel, Huntington County Prosecutor Amy Richison and Assistant Police Chief Pat Scher.

The program is expected to last approximately 45 minutes.

 

Boys & Girls Club to provide locals with free meals during summer program

The Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County will provide local children with free breakfast and lunch during its summer program May 29 through Aug. 10.

The club will serve meals Monday through Friday. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m.

The club's food service program is an extension of the government funded Summer Food Service Program. Children 18 years old and under may receive meals through SFSP and are not required to be members of the Boys & Girls Club in order to participate in the program.

The Riverview History Club won the championship at the third annual Hoosier History Bowl in Indianapolis, Saturday, April 28. The team placed first in the middle school/high school division by answering questions on Indiana history. Invite professionals to meth training, awareness session May 3

Professionals who may come into contact with methamphetamines in the course of serving the public are invited to attend a training and awareness session on Thursday, May 3, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Warren Fire Department.

The training is sponsored by the Huntington County Sheriff's Department and the Warren Fire Department.

It's becoming more and more common for law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians to encounter meth labs or meth components inside a home when responding to a call, Sheriff Terry Stoffel says.

Mother’s Day carnations

Rose Wall of Wehr Into Flowers and Deanna Mills, publicity chairman of Right to Life, prepare for the 34th Annual Mother's Day Carnation Sale. The sale will be held May 11 to May 13 at local businesses and SS Peter and Paul and St. Mary's churches. All proceeds will benefit pro-life efforts in the United States.

Lincoln School reunion June 2 at Memorial Park

A reunion will be held for everyone who went to Lincoln School on Swan Street, in Huntington.

The reunion will be held Saturday, June 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the small pavilion at Memorial Park in Huntington.
Attendees are encouraged to bring pictures and any items they have to share from their years at Lincoln.

Also, please bring desserts and snacks. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Bottled water and table service will be provided.
