BSB wins 3 MAXI awards at IBA conference

Bippus State Bank won three MAXI Awards this year at the Mega Conference of the Indiana Bankers Association (IBA) on May 2 in downtown Indianapolis.

MAXI Awards are presented annually to IBA-member institutions to recognize bank marketing excellence in Indiana.

Bippus State Bank won in the categories of annual report, special events and radio spot.

This year the IBA once again presented Bippus State Bank with the Five Star Member Award that recognizes the bank's outstanding commitment to political awareness, issue advocacy, life-long learning and volunteerism.

Banks merge on May 1

First Farmers Financial Corp., Converse and First Citizens of Paris, Inc., Paris, IL, completed their previously announced merger on May 1 by which Citizens National Bank merged into First Farmers Bank & Trust, the wholly owned subsidiary bank of FFFC.

The acquisition will give First Farmers Bank & Trust 24 branches (21 in Indiana and three in Illinois), over $1.1 billion in assets and gross capital of over $100 million.

Cattlemen to meet on May 24

The Huntington County Cattlemen will meet on Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m., in the Family Living Building, Hier's Park.

The group will be reviewing the 2012 Preview Show and planning for food booth at the 2012 4-H Fair.

Local students among Manchester College graduates

Seven local students were among the 258 graduates at the 123rd commencement of Manchester College, Sunday, May 20.

Two hundred and fifty-six bachelor's degrees and two Master's of Athletic Training were awarded.

Local graduates include:

Andrews - Ryne Hastings, Bachelor of Science in communication studies.

Huntington - Carol Campos, Bachelor of Science in biology; Austin Hamilton, Bachelor of Science in accounting/finance; Tyler Henn, Bachelor of Science in accounting/management; and Kaitlin Johnson, Bachelor of Arts in chemistry/Spanish.

HU trustees grant trio emeritus status

Three retiring Huntington University faculty members have been granted emeritus status by the board of trustees for their service to the university.

Chaney Bergdall, Ph.D., has served the university for 35 years as a professor of Bible and Religion. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Huntington College, a Master of Arts in Palestinology from the Institute of Holy Land Studies in Israel, and a Ph.D. in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he also was a teaching assistant.

Next B’fast Showcase is June 5 at Habecker

The Huntington County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Showcase will be held Tuesday, June 5, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Huntington University's Habecker Dining Commons.

Featured speakers will be from Perry Corporation presenting "Document Solutions," and Lillsun Manufacturing presenting "Pizza Peels: What Are They?"

Free Fishing Weekend to be hosted by Upper Wabash Interpretive Services

The Upper Wabash Interpretive Services will host fishing derbies for kids aged two to 14 on Saturday, June 2, in recognition of Free Fishing Weekend.

Derbies will be held at Mississinewa and Salamonie lakes, J. Edward Roush Fish and Wildlife Area and Ouabache State Park.

The derbies are free. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with fishing from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow.

Markle Industrial Park is certified by state group as ‘shovel ready’

The Markle Industrial Park has been certified by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation as "shovel ready."

That designation tells potential developers that many required studies have already been completed, which will streamline the process of locating there, says Mark Wickersham, executive director of Huntington County United Economic Development (HCUED).

Rockcreek alumni and friends gather for reunion at Norwell High School

Classmates and guests of the Rockcreek Alumni met for the annual banquet on May 12 at Norwell High School.

Arlin and Sally McAfee, Susan Hogg Price, Diane Cupp Rice and Dale and Marie Dolby welcomed classmates and guests at the hospitality table.

President Arlin McAfee welcomed everyone and the invocation was given by John Walmsley. One hundred and thirty-one alumni and their guests were in attendance.

McAfee encouraged the classmates to check out the four county school banners that were hung last fall.

Class of 2012 to fund prayer patio at Huntington University

The Huntington University Class of 2012 left a spiritual parting gift for future Foresters.

Senior class President Sarah Martindale announced at commencement that the class will be providing Huntington University with the means to build a prayer patio outside of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

"We came to the conclusion that there are prayer rooms, but there's no place outside that is set aside for a person to go to and spend time with God," Martindale said. "We concluded a prayer area would work well."

Local Tri Kappa sorority awards scholarships to five students

Huntington's Tri Kappa sorority recently awarded four general scholarships and the Laura Blackburn Memorial Scholarship.

A total of $3,000 in scholarships was awarded this year.
Matthew Gargiulo received the $1,000 Laura Blackburn Memorial Scholarship, while Landon Poulson, Amanda Kaiser, Courtney Gick and Laura Daronatsy all received a $500 general scholarship.

Gargiulo is a senior at Olivet Nazarene University where he is majoring in elementary education with middle school endorsement.

Huntington North High School senior Landon Poulson (left) receives a scholarship for $1,000 from members of Bluffton Elks Lodge 769, represented by Don Schoeff, on Monday, May 21. Poulson is the son of Don and Marsha Poulson and plans to study pharmacy at Manchester College in the fall. Schoeff said that the funds for the local scholarship originated from the merger of Huntington Elks Lodge 2803 with the Bluffton lodge.
