Annual 4-H Pet Parade to be held on July 23 at United REMC Outdoor Stage

The annual 4-H Pet Parade will be held Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at the United REMC Outdoor Stage at Hier's Park in Huntington.

Children ages 9 and younger may participate, provided they are not enrolled in the regular 4-H program. Mini 4-H members, however, are eligible to enter the event.

Participants may choose to enter their pet as individuals or as groups of two or more, and are encouraged to wear a costume and dress up their pets.

Each child will receive a prize.

Ice cream social, illusionist Barron set for July 29 at Clear Creek Church

Clear Creek Church will have an ice cream social on Sunday, July 29 at 5 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided by Jim Barron, a Christian comedian and illusionist.

Breyer's Ice Cream will provide cake, pie and sandwiches.

Those attending should bring a chair.

The church is located at 750 N. Clear Creek Rd.

 

New Huntington pizzeria is a family operation

Veteran Huntington business owners Ron and Peggy Mang recently opened Bruno's Pizzeria at 1268 S. Jefferson St., Huntington.

Mang says he and his wife were looking for a retirement business, and when the location came available with the equipment, it seemed like a natural fit. Mang's nephew owns a Bruno's and helped them get started.

Mang says he was familiar with Bruno's because that was the pizza he bought as a youth growing up in Frankfort. The Frankfort Bruno's opened in 1955, and Mang's nephew bought the business in 2004.

Health dept. to offer back-to-school vaccinations at county fair next week

The Huntington County Health Department will be at the Huntington County 4-H Fair to offer back-to-school vaccinations.

Available vaccinations will include T-dap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), meningitis and chicken pox boosters, which must be received by all children entering sixth grade.

Kindergarten boosters will also be available.
The deadline to receive the vaccinations is Aug. 16.

Artists, crafters will offer their work at church event

St. Peter's First Community Church, located at 206 Etna Avenue in Huntington will host the Dog Days of Summer Arts and Crafts Sale on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local artists and crafters will sell their work, along with items donated to the church for the event.

Also, homemade baked goods and light lunch items will be for sale.

Alexander J. Herber (left) was recently awarded the Constance L. Schul Scholarship by Janice Ruckman, representative of the scholarship committee. The $500 scholarship was established by retired veterinarian George Schul to honor his wife Connie, a former Tri Kappa member.

Bradley Flooring Center now open on Tipton Street

Jim Bradley is the owner of Bradley Flooring Center, located in Huntington.

The business opened on July 1.

The Huntington resident says he felt it was time to open his own flooring center.

"I have over 22 years of experience in the business and wanted to open a store that specializes only in flooring," states Bradley.

He adds that his installer has 25 years of experience.

The store offers carpeting, vinyl, laminate, ceramic tiling, luxury tiling and vinyl tiles, just to name a few.

Library, Army Corps of Engineers invite kids in grades 1-6 to July 18 program about discovering nature

The Huntington City-Township Public Library and the J. Edward Roush Lake Army Corps of Engineers invite children in grades 1 through 6 to Discovering Nature.

The program will be held at the main library in Huntington on Wednesday, July 18 at 10 a.m.

Maggie Kubina, park ranger at Roush Lake, will describe many kinds of outdoor adventures children may have in Huntington County, including hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping and many more. She will also discuss types of wildlife children may find outdoors, and safety tips for outdoor activities.

Five from county lauded as ‘Good Men’

Five Huntington County residents were among the "100 Good Men" honored by the YWCA Northeast Indiana during the July 11 Fort Wayne TinCaps game.

Local honorees were Dean Beery, Pete Schownir, Leon Stong, Jim Tolbert and George DeWeese.

The men were selected to recognize the role they play in achieving the YWCA's mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

The YWCA is based in Fort Wayne and serves Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, Wells and Whitley counties.

 

YSB’s school supplies program to start soon

The Youth Services Bureau's "Tools for Life" school supplies program will soon be underway.

This program provides school supplies for students in need in Huntington County.

"In 2011 we provided 828 students with the school supplies they needed to start school," says Jan Williams, executive director of Youth Services Bureau.
"That was the highest number the agency had served since it began the program in 1994."

It is anticipated that this year the number will be even higher due to the economic situation in the country.

Shepherd’s Food Pantry to hold food distribution

The Shepherd's Food Pantry, in Andrews, will hold a food distribution on Thursday, July 19.

Boxes of food will be available for Andrews residents and will be handed out between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 39 W. McKeever St., Andrews.

No appointment is necessary. Boxes of food are given out on a first come, first served basis.

 

Three are Trine graduates

Three local students graduated from Trine University on May 5 in Hershey Hall on the university's main campus in Angola.

Brendon Abbott of Huntington earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

Allison Christman, daughter of John and Nondus Christman, of Huntington earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting.

Christman accepted a position as an accounting assistant at Computer Age Engineering in Marion.

Historical society to feature program on ‘Main Street Huntington’

This building that houses Lime City Title Services on Jefferson St. in downtown Huntington was restored by a grant from Main Street Huntington. The committee desires to keep historical significance as well as improve modern practicality and usage.

The Huntington County Historical Society will hold its general meeting on Wednesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Historical Museum.

The program will feature "Main Street Huntington," and members of the volunteer committee Rose Wall and Bryn Keplinger will speak on the work that the committee is doing.

The group strives to help community companies and organizations by supplying grants for roof, façade, and other necessary repairs.

Light refreshments will be served following the program.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
