Huntington Catholic School to hold orientation sessions on Aug. 9 Monday, July 23, 2012 7:48 AM Huntington Catholic School will hold two orientation sessions on Thursday, Aug. 9, for families of students who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade this fall. Sessions will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Primary Building, 820 Cherry St. Families need to attend only one of the sessions. During the program, school procedures and opportunities will be explained. The orientation is mandatory for all families. Daronatsy, Gick, Koch earn Optimist scholarships Monday, July 23, 2012 7:47 AM Laura Daronatsy, Courtney Gick and Kayla Koch are the recipients of $1,000 scholarships from the Huntington County Optimist Club. The Huntington Optimist Club offers scholarships to Huntington County residents who are high school seniors. Applicants are reviewed on the basis of their academic achievement, community involvement, letters of recommendation from teachers and non-teachers, and an essay addressing the impact of optimism on their daily lives. Registration to start soon for local school corporation students Monday, July 23, 2012 7:46 AM Registration will start soon for the Huntington County Community School Corporation. All elementary students, all sixth grade students and any new students in grades seven through 12 must register. Registration will take place at the school of attendance. Any new students enrolling must bring copies of their birth certificate and immunization records. Gluten-intolerant residents of Huntington County now have a place to satisfy those bread cravings. Good Grains/Seren-dipity Sweets, a joint bakery in Roanoke serving completely gluten-free products, is now open for business. The bakery, run by Melissa Paul and Amanda Williams, opened up on June 22. The shared storefront sells Good Grains bread products (Paul) and a variety of Serendipity Sweets desserts (Williams). Founded in 1861, L'Osservatore Romano publishes papal discourses, texts and documents, reports on the events of the church and Pope Benedict XVI, and provides news of cultural debates and international life from the perspective of the Catholic Church. 4-H Association acquires property at Hier’s Park Monday, July 23, 2012 7:31 AM Photo by Cindy Klepper. The Huntington County 4-H Fair Association has reached an agreement to purchase 3.31 acres of land adjacent to the current fairgrounds at Hier's Park. The land, which has in the past been used for parking during the 4-H Fair, will continue to be used for parking while the fair board studies the future needs of the fair, fair board President Cory Boxell says. Habitat to mark milestone Monday, July 23, 2012 7:30 AM Huntington County Habitat for Humanity will break ground on the organization's 25th Huntington County home on Tuesday, July 31, at noon. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the future site of the home, 66 Green Hill Court in Huntington. The community is invited to attend. Habitat, Lowe’s to offer free clinics Monday, July 23, 2012 7:30 AM Huntington County Habitat for Humanity and Lowe's in Bluffton have teamed up to offer a series of free clinics designed to give Huntington County women a chance to learn skills they can use in their own homes and on Habitat construction sites. Clinic topics include installing exterior siding, on Aug. 6; installing roofing shingles, on Sept. 10; installing insulation and drywall, on Oct. 8; and interior paint and trim, on Nov. 12. Mounsey, of Huntington, has been named to the dean's list for the May 2012 session in the College of Applied Technologies at the University of Northwestern Ohio. Mounsey is employed by MSM Transport, Inc., in Huntington. He is a 2011 graduate of Huntington North High School, and the son of Mitch and Melissa Mounsey. Fagin on stage Monday, July 23, 2012 7:18 AM Travis Fisher plays the role of Fagin, the aging head of a gang of young pickpockets, in the Pulse Opera House production of "Oliver." The musical is based on the Charles Dickens book "Oliver Twist." Remaining shows at the downtown Warren theater are this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 26, 27 and 28, and on the following two weekends, Aug. 2-4 and 9-11.
